Stop Animal Testing on Shelter Dogs in Ankara, Turkey

WVTA - World Voice for Turkish Animals

There has been an unbelievable animal testing scandal in Ankara involving stray dogs. Please keep the following in mind while you read this: only a handful of cases of animal testing are actually uncovered, this one has come out by coincidence. Just imagine what goes on undercover – just imagine the horrors that go behind the doors given what you will read in this message has gone so openly.

We have to react in the strongest way against this dirty and painful game that involves innocent animals. It is a crime. If you remain silent, it means that you are
an accessory to this torture. What happened is absolutely unacceptable. I invite anyone with common sense to condemn this violent experiment.

Umit Duman, the Head of the Ankara Association of Veterinarians, said that other associations in Ankara fully support their practices and they will continue (animal testing) at the Golbasi shelter in Ankara.

So, the gist of it is: unless we stop them, all the horrors of animal experiments will continue.

Endoscopy and biopsy, which the statements issued by the relevant parties present as very simple procedures, are in fact very painful ones and they are “last resort” option. They are definitely not about treatment.

What they are trying to misrepresent is this: the subject (of the experiment) swallows a tube down its throat; an additional instrument goes inside the tube
to collect (or chop off!) a sample from the stomach. The subject (that is the shelter dog) is AWAKE and CONSCIOUS during all of this.

What is worse is that there is no medical purpose to this violent experiment – the only purpose was to train vet students. This is absolutely unacceptable.

The training program further included a section on “removing foreign objects”.

What are the chances of coming up with such a dog exactly at the same time for a course that was scheduled weeks ago? Or did they implant a foreign object into shelter dogs? The decision is yours….

But most importantly, this experiment was against the law.

  1. Under no circumstances can experiments be conducted at animal shelters. Neither can animal shelters can allow any animal to be taken away for medical experiments.  This has been made clear under the 5199 Animal Protection Act.
  2. All experiments by veterinarians have to be approved of the “ethics committee”.  No approval was taken for this experiment.

The names and institutions listed below have actively taken part in this scandal:

  • Ankara Association of Veterinarians
  • Cankaya Municipality
  • Veterinarian Tamer Dodurga
  • Veterinarian Alparslan Inan
  • Veterinarian Ilknur Sadic

Furthermore, the associations named below, are unfortunately becoming an accessory to this crime by not only remaining silent about all of this but also by
having signed a protocol whose purpose cannot be exacted.

  • HAYKOD
  • Meliha Yilmaz Foundation
  • DOGCEV
  • Cayyolu Association to Protect Natural Life

The Ankara Asscoation of Veterinarians has pre-planned this experiment (that is, this is not some random thing): http://www.avho.org.tr/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=131

It was conducted at the Cankaya Municipality Muhye Shelter under the approval and control of veterinarians Alparslan Inan and Ilknur Sadic. About 3-4 years ago, the Cankaya shelter had been involved in an experiment scandal as well. Under the approval of the shelter manager and Ilknur Sadic, 15 dogs were taken out of the shelter after adoption documents were prepared for them – only to be sent away for experiments which were not approved of by any ethics committee)

This experiment was conducted under the name “lecture” to vet students given by Tamer Dodurga. The participants paid 400 liras. What happened to this money? How was it shared? For instance, did the associations or the shelter take any sum out of it? How much money was Tamer Dodurga paid? All of these questions still remain unanswered.

I hope that those animal rights organizations in Ankara which have signed a joint protocol with the Ankara Association of Vets will immediately revoke this protocol following this experiment, and press charges against those responsible. Or else, they will become an accessory to this horror.

I would like to assure everybody that I will follow this scandal till the end.

  1. Carol Crunkhorn says:

How dare they do this to any animal! Do they think because animals are in a shelter that they don’t matter – well yes, obviously that is what they think. Nobody will speak out for these dogs. Wrong! we will speak out for them. To perform such painful experiments on fully conscious animals is evil, it is torture – those who do this should be charged for this atrocious crime against innocent animals. As well as that, may they rot in hell.
