There they all are in the celebrity magazine Heat this week: a parade of stick-thin stars so emaciated they look as if the slightest pressure would snap them in two.

‘The Rise Of The Celebrity Twiglets!’ screams the headline, beneath a procession of skeletal young women. The analogy is entirely appropriate.

These women have no more substance than a cocktail snack. Indeed, their limbs are so denuded of flesh that they resemble the knobbly appendages of famine victims.

Who are they? Actually – and significantly – they are not identified by their achievements, merely by their appearance.

More than two months later, we still haven’t forgotten the images of Haiti being reduced to rubble in the worst catastrophe in its 200-year-old history. But with the devastation in Haiti–and in the aftermath of Chile’s worst earthquake in over 40 years–we have also witnessed unprecedented support from private and governmental agencies, religious groups of all denominations, and international relief organizations from around the world.

When we think of disaster relief and humanitarian organizations, which come to mind first and why? How effective and memorable are their identities?

Beer. It refreshes and relaxes, it fuels sociability and cools the burn of spicy food. It is the most-widely consumed alcoholic beverage in the world, and the third most common beverage overall (after water and tea, who knew?). It is the oldest alcoholic beverage produced–and in fact, the oldest known code of laws (the Code of Hammurabi ca 1750 B.C.) called for the death penalty for drinking-house proprietors found guilty of watering down their beer. Those Babylonians sure took their suds seriously.

But aside from the numero uno use for beer–drinking! woohoo!–it is one of the most over-looked components of many a DIY solution to common household conundrums. Here are nine alternative ways to put your brew to good use.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with this movie, it’s the story of Ric O’Barry, the man who trained Flipper for the TV show of the same name, and inadvertently started a multi-million dollar dolphin industry. O’Barry is the first human to have had longterm intimate contact with these creatures (who some say may be more intelligent than humans) and quickly realized that captivity was not where they belonged. Over the past 35 years he has continued a quest to free captive dolphins, and The Cove is the culmination (but surely not the end) of his trek.

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices had gradually been expanding its recommendation for flu shots – 85 percent of Americans were already included.

On Wednesday, the panel voted to recommend a seasonal flu vaccination for everyone except babies younger than 6 months and those with egg allergies or other unusual conditions.

The panel’s recommendation now goes to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC usually follows the panel’s advice and spreads the message to doctors and hospitals across the country.

It was an Election Day in Costa Rica yesterday. February is an extremely dry month, in the heart of the dry season, and it had been very sunny in San José for close to a month, without any strong wind to bring us clouds from the Continental Divide: the weather was clear all over. Yet on the 6, we had a massive chemtrail spraying all over the Central Valley (where most Costaricans live). All morning long, planes were making a crisscross grid of “cloud” lines, and when a friend called me to warn me, it was already high noon, with a tremendous Sun. We filmed them with a cell phone, and even with the huge amount of light… they still came out pretty impressive.
